Uganda Airlines is set to make history with the launch of direct flights between Entebbe International Airport and London Gatwick, starting May 18, 2025. This move not only re-establishes a crucial air link between Uganda and the UK but also positions Uganda’s national carrier as a rising force in international aviation.

The launch marks Uganda Airlines’ first venture into the European market, opening new opportunities for trade, tourism, and investment. The airline, which has been steadily expanding its regional network, now aims to compete on a global scale by connecting Uganda directly to one of Europe’s busiest aviation hubs.

Speaking at the announcement event, Uganda Airlines CEO Jenifer Bamuturaki described the milestone as a strategic breakthrough. “This route marks the end of our establishment phase and sets us on the course for long-term growth. It connects Uganda to critical business and tourism markets in Western Europe and beyond," she said.

Uganda has long been a key destination for UK travelers, with Britain being one of the top sources of international visitors. The direct flights are expected to boost tourism numbers and improve access to Uganda’s natural attractions, including the world-famous mountain gorillas.

Additionally, the route is expected to strengthen Uganda’s export sector. In 2024, Uganda’s exports to the UK were valued at $22.6 million, and with the cargo capacity of the Airbus A330-800neo, the airline aims to increase the volume of fresh produce reaching the UK market.

Flights will operate four times a week, connecting seamlessly with Uganda Airlines’ growing African network, which includes key cities such as Nairobi, Lagos, Johannesburg, Kinshasa, and Accra. The airline, currently the largest operator out of Entebbe with 77 weekly departures, will now increase its operations to 81 weekly flights.

The success of the new route is attributed to the collaborative efforts of Uganda Airlines, the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority, and the British High Commission, which ensured smooth regulatory approvals. “We are grateful for the support in securing the Foreign Carrier Permit for this route," Bamuturaki noted.

With tickets now available via the Uganda Airlines website, mobile app, and authorized travel agents, the airline is poised to strengthen its role in regional and international aviation, aligning with Uganda’s Vision 2040 for economic growth and global integration.
