The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has pledged an additional $200 million in humanitarian assistance for Sudan, reinforcing its commitment to supporting the Sudanese people.  UAE Minister of State, Sheikh Shakhbout bin Nahyan, emphasized the importance of a collaborative international response to the current situation, highlighting the need for collective action.

The UAE, alongside Ethiopia, the African Union, and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, is co-hosting a high-level humanitarian conference in Addis Ababa. The conference aims to mobilize essential support for Sudan and has attracted representatives from over 50 countries and international organizations, including France, Canada, and the United States. Participants, in partnership with the United Nations and African stakeholders, have called for a Ramadan ceasefire to facilitate humanitarian efforts.

Approximately 190 delegates are attending the conference, underscoring the global commitment to addressing the humanitarian needs in Sudan. Speaking at a media briefing, Sheikh Shakhbout reaffirmed the UAE’s longstanding support for Sudan, citing the nation’s continuous assistance over the years.

“Since April 2023, the UAE has contributed over $400 million to support the Sudanese people, both within the country and in neighboring nations that have extended their hospitality to Sudanese refugees. Today, we further strengthen our commitment with an additional $200 million in humanitarian funding,” Sheikh Shakhbout stated. “Over the past decade, our support for Sudan has reached $3.5 billion, reflecting our unwavering solidarity.”

Sheikh Shakhbout reiterated the importance of ensuring safe and unimpeded humanitarian access across Sudan, safeguarding aid workers and facilities, and enabling relief efforts to reach those in need. He emphasized the UAE’s firm stance in assisting the Sudanese people and fostering stability in the region.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed also reaffirmed his country’s commitment to standing with Sudan, offering refuge to those seeking safety and pledging continued support during this challenging period.

The conference in Addis Ababa serves as a crucial platform for international partners to coordinate their efforts and enhance humanitarian assistance, ensuring that essential resources reach those most in need. The UAE’s latest financial commitment underscores its dedication to supporting Sudan and strengthening international cooperation in humanitarian response efforts.
