South African Grammy winner Tyla lit up Hollywood with double honours at the 2025 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards, becoming both the first African host and a major award winner at the star-studded event.

Held at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, the ceremony marked a turning point for African visibility in youth entertainment. Tyla, 23, commanded the stage with magnetic presence, kicking off the night with a dynamic dance number alongside DJ Benny Blanco and a surprise cameo from Smurfette, instantly setting the tone for a fun-filled show.

The Grammy-winning sensation wasn’t just hosting; she made history. Drenched multiple times in Nickelodeon’s signature slime and unfazed by the chaos, she shared the spotlight with familiar faces like Jack Griffo and pop group KATSEYE.

Midway through the night, Tyla received the Favourite Global Music Star (Africa) award, a fan-voted category that saw her triumph over artists from six other continents. Holding the bright orange blimp trophy, she beamed with pride:

“This means the world to me to represent Africa on a global stage and be recognised by all of you amazing kids out there… Africa to the world!”

The night also featured big wins from Sabrina Carpenter, who took home three awards, and a special honour for Rihanna, who received the ICON Silver Blimp. The hit musical Wicked claimed Favourite Movie.

For Tyla, whose journey with Nickelodeon began as a hopeful child auditioning for a role, the hosting gig was more than a job; it was a full-circle dream fulfilled.

“I just hope I only get a little drizzle of slime,” she laughed beforehand, only to be hilariously proven wrong.

With her charismatic performance and heartfelt acceptance speech, Tyla didn’t just host a show; she raised the flag for African talent on one of the world’s most youth-centric platforms.
