In a groundbreaking moment for Africa, Senegal has emerged as a global leader in sustainable water management through its innovative public-private partnership (PPP) with French utility giant SUEZ.

The collaboration, operating under the name SEN’EAU, earned international recognition at the 9th International Forum on Public-Private Partnerships (PPP), hosted by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) in Belgrade from May 14 to 16.

Out of 60 international projects, SEN’EAU was the only African initiative to receive top honours, celebrating its exemplary model for delivering high-quality, climate-resilient water services while contributing directly to the UN’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Established five years ago, SEN’EAU was launched in response to Senegal’s escalating water challenges fueled by climate change, urban expansion, and rapid population growth. Today, the joint venture ensures continuous access to clean and safe drinking water for more than 10 million people in both urban and peri-urban areas.

What sets SEN’EAU apart is its holistic and future-proof approach. The initiative integrates environmental sustainability, digital innovation, and community ownership, an alignment that reflects the UNECE’s core PPP principles of ecological stewardship, digital transformation, and national sovereignty.

UNECE praised the project as a scalable blueprint for other countries facing similar water stress, affirming that the Senegalese model is both adaptable and replicable across diverse contexts.

As global leaders search for solutions to pressing resource challenges, Senegal’s award-winning PPP demonstrates how strategic collaboration between government and private enterprise can deliver a lasting, inclusive impact.
