The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC) have pledged to enhance collaboration in maritime governance, focusing on flag and port state control, seafarer certification, cabotage implementation, maritime security, and digital transformation. The commitment was solidified during a working visit by TASAC, led by Vice Chairman Rukia D. Shante, to NIMASA’s headquarters, as announced in a NIMASA statement on May 21, 2025.

NIMASA Director General Dr. Dayo Mobereola described the partnership as a “mutually beneficial” opportunity to share expertise and address common maritime challenges. He highlighted Nigeria’s advancements in maritime security, particularly the Deep Blue Project, and welcomed TASAC’s insights. The initiative has the backing of Nigeria’s Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola.

TASAC Director General Mohammed Salumu, represented by Mrs. Leticia Mutaki, praised NIMASA’s regulatory reforms and investments in seafarer welfare, expressing Tanzania’s interest in adopting similar systems. “Nigeria’s Deep Blue framework and human capacity development are commendable,” Mutaki said, emphasizing Tanzania’s intent to learn from Nigeria’s certification and inspection processes.

The visit also underscored Tanzania’s support for Nigeria’s bid for a Category C seat on the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council. “Nigeria’s position is vital for Africa,” Shante stated, reaffirming Tanzania’s endorsement. The collaboration aims to bolster maritime safety, security, and environmental stewardship across the continent, with both agencies committed to long-term strategic cooperation.
