Nigeria is taking proactive steps to enhance its healthcare system by leveraging domestic resources and fostering private-sector investments, according to the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Pate.
Mr. Pate, in a statement issued on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Media and External Relations, Tashikalmah Hallah, emphasized that the Nigerian government is committed to building a resilient health sector that is less dependent on foreign aid.
Acknowledging the significant support Nigeria has received from international partners, particularly the United States, the minister expressed deep appreciation while underscoring the importance of self-sufficiency.
“For Nigeria, we sincerely appreciate all the support received,” he said. “However, it is unwise for any country to rely entirely on another for the health and lives of its population.”
He highlighted the government’s determination to invest in sustainable healthcare solutions, strengthen local pharmaceutical production, and expand biosecurity and health security collaborations across Africa.
A key development in Nigeria’s healthcare evolution is the approval of the ratification of the African Medicines Agency Treaty. This move positions Nigeria within a broader African market for locally produced medicines, reducing dependency on imports and boosting regional trade.
Mr. Pate also invited international investors, including American partners, to explore opportunities in Nigeria’s growing health sector, emphasizing that the country offers innovations, tools, and technologies that can be mutually beneficial.
“Here in Nigeria, we are focused on rebuilding our health system, strengthening domestic resources, and providing services for our citizens,” he said.
The minister’s statement comes amid a temporary pause in US foreign aid funding, announced on January 24. Despite these changes, Nigeria remains focused on strengthening its healthcare infrastructure and ensuring better services for its citizens through strategic investments and collaborations.
