Namibia’s energy sector has reached another milestone with the discovery of high-quality light oil and gas condensate in the Mopane-3X well, reinforcing the country’s growing reputation as a major player in global hydrocarbon exploration.

Custos Energy, in partnership with Galp Energia and the National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia (NAMCOR), announced that Mopane-3X—drilled under Petroleum Exploration License 83 (PEL 83)—has delivered promising results, further unlocking the potential of the Orange Basin.

The well, spudded on January 2, 2025, targeted multiple reservoir zones and successfully confirmed significant columns of light oil in high-quality sandstones.

With excellent porosity, high pressures, and strong permeability, the findings indicate exceptional reservoir quality, enhancing confidence in Namibia’s offshore oil prospects.

According to Custos, the positive data from Mopane-3X opens the door for further exploration and appraisal opportunities. A cutting-edge 3D seismic acquisition campaign is already underway to refine future drilling targets, with data processing set to follow in the coming months.

“These additional discoveries in an entirely new section of Mopane further demonstrate the scale and quality of the complex. An emerging clarity on the multi-phase potential of Mopane is underpinned by this world-class asset," said Knowledge Katti, Chairman and CEO of Custos Energy.

"We congratulate our Joint Venture partners on another safe and successful outing. We are uniquely positioned at the heart of this hydrocarbon province.”

With sustained momentum and strategic exploration efforts, Namibia’s Orange Basin continues to emerge as one of the most exciting frontiers for energy development, attracting investment and solidifying the nation’s position in the oil and gas industry.
