In a major move to enhance energy security and economic growth, the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) has reinforced its commitment to electricity expansion and sustainability through a newly signed power purchase agreement (PPA) with CI-Energies in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

This agreement, which secures 50 megawatts of electricity for Liberia, forms part of a broader strategy to improve power reliability, expand access, and invest in renewable energy solutions.

Beyond securing external power sources, Liberia is prioritizing long-term energy stability through investments in green energy and infrastructure development.

LEC has embarked on several initiatives, including the construction of a solar farm set to go live in October 2025, the repair and expansion of the Mount Coffee Hydro Power Plant, and an increase in thermal capacity to address dry-season shortages.

These efforts align with the government’s national goal of ensuring broader access to electricity while promoting sustainable energy use.

Interim Managing Director of LEC, Mr. Thomas Z. Gonkerwon, emphasized that electricity is a critical driver of economic growth and highlighted the corporation’s efforts to connect large-scale consumers, such as industrial parks, to the national grid.

He also reassured CI-Energies that Liberia remains committed to honoring its agreements, acknowledging the importance of financial discipline in sustaining cross-border energy partnerships.

Additionally, the government has mandated the installation of prepaid meters at all government institutions, except medical facilities, to enhance efficiency and curb electricity wastage. This initiative is expected to improve revenue collection and ensure that power is used effectively across public offices.

With demand for electricity on the rise, LEC is calling on consumers to use power efficiently and avoid wasteful consumption. As Liberia moves forward with these ambitious energy projects, the country is positioning itself for a more stable and reliable electricity supply, paving the way for economic transformation and national development.
