Former Super Eagles striker Brown Ideye has issued a wake-up call to Nigeria’s national football team, urging them to raise their standards after a humiliating 4-0 defeat to Sudan in the CHAN tournament.

Ideye, who has competed at the highest levels in the Premier League and Ligue 1, did not hold back in his assessment.

“We’re deluding ourselves if we think we’re making progress in football,” he said. “The defeat to Sudan exposed our weaknesses. We need to take a hard look at ourselves and admit that our infrastructure, club management, and talent development are all below par.”

The former forward stressed that the coach can only work with the resources provided, underscoring the urgent need for systemic reform in Nigerian football. His remarks follow recent criticism of his former club, Enyimba, over what he described as unprofessional treatment of players.

For Ideye, the message is clear: the Super Eagles must move beyond complacency, confront their shortcomings, and commit to genuine improvement if they are to become a force on the international stage once again.
