In a landmark move set to reshape regional connectivity, Ethiopian Airlines and Etihad Airways have signed a Joint Business Agreement (JBA) to enhance trade, tourism, and economic collaboration between Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.

The agreement, formalized in Addis Ababa, introduces a comprehensive codeshare arrangement and new direct flights between Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates. Ethiopian Airlines will launch its first flights to Abu Dhabi on July 15, while Etihad Airways will begin daily services to Addis Ababa on October 1.

This partnership goes beyond passenger convenience, it is expected to fuel economic growth by facilitating business travel, cargo transport, and tourism between the regions. The UAE is a key trading partner for African nations, and the enhanced connectivity will streamline exports from Africa to the Middle East and Asia, particularly in agriculture, technology, and infrastructure.

Lieutenant General Yilma Merdassa, Chairman of Ethiopian Airlines Group Board, emphasized the broader impact of the agreement, stating:

“This partnership will significantly elevate our ties with the UAE,” Merdassa said. “It is an exciting milestone not just for Ethiopian Airlines, but for our country and the entire African continent. Through this agreement, we aim to provide seamless and efficient travel options that benefit our passengers and strengthen the economic and cultural exchange between our nations.”

Ethiopian Airlines’ well-established presence in Uganda will further benefit from this agreement, as it continues to be a crucial link between East Africa and the global market. With daily flights between Addis Ababa and Entebbe International Airport, Uganda’s main gateway, the airline plays a significant role in regional trade and tourism.

By integrating Etihad Airways’ network, Ugandan businesses and travelers will gain more flexible and efficient routes to the Middle East and Asia. The increased connectivity is expected to boost tourism, facilitate smoother trade flows, and enhance Uganda’s role as an emerging business hub in East Africa.

Beyond passenger services, the agreement is expected to drive significant growth in cargo transport. The enhanced air links will provide faster, more efficient shipping routes for goods moving between Africa and international markets. Ethiopian Airlines and Etihad Airways will collaborate to expand cargo capacity, benefiting exporters looking to reach the Middle East and Asia with greater ease.

Mesfin Tasew, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, described the agreement as “historic” and a game-changer for regional aviation and trade.

This partnership opens the door for unprecedented growth in connectivity between Africa, the Middle East, and Asia,” Tasew said. “It marks the first joint venture for Ethiopian Airlines, a testament to our commitment to strategic global partnerships that deliver lasting benefits to our passengers and the airline industry as a whole.”

Etihad Airways CEO Antonoaldo Neves echoed this sentiment, praising Ethiopian Airlines as a leader in African aviation.

Ethiopian Airlines has long been recognized as a pioneer in African aviation, together, we will offer world-class services that deliver convenience, flexibility, and value to our customers.” Neves said.

Introducing direct flights between Addis Ababa and Abu Dhabi marks a significant step in improving travel efficiency for business travelers, tourists, and cargo shippers. The expanded network will strengthen Ethiopia’s aviation sector while positioning the UAE as a key gateway for African markets looking to expand their global reach.

With this strategic partnership, Ethiopian Airlines and Etihad Airways are setting the stage for a new era of collaboration, connectivity, and economic development across Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.
