Ethiopia’s bold strides in agriculture are earning international recognition, with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reaffirming its support for the country’s ambitious food security goals.

FAO Representative in Ethiopia, Farayi Zimudzi, highlighted Ethiopia’s achievements in agriculture as a model for other African nations.

She emphasized that the country’s commitment to wheat self-sufficiency and broader food security initiatives has set a precedent that many are keen to follow.

"Ethiopia’s advancements in agriculture should be model across Africa to achieve food security," she emphasized, adding, "These efforts are crucial and truly commendable."

Ethiopia’s push for food self-sufficiency has already gained global recognition. In January 2024, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was awarded the prestigious Agricola Medal in Rome for his leadership in advancing food security.

This recognition underscores the tangible results Ethiopia has achieved, particularly in wheat production.

Beyond increasing production, Zimudzi stressed the need for enhancing market access and storage facilities to ensure food reaches consumers efficiently.

"These efforts are commendable, and it is essential that we continue to support and collaborate to make food self-sufficiency a reality for every Ethiopian, particularly in wheat production," she noted.

FAO remains committed to providing technical and financial support to Ethiopia, reinforcing the country’s journey toward a resilient and self-sufficient agricultural sector.
