ECOWAS
In a bid to combat youth unemployment and drive agricultural transformation, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has earmarked $2.2 million to train nearly 4,000 young people in the agro-sylvo-pastoral and fisheries sector.
The program, set for 2025-2026, will not only provide technical skills but also empower youth to become self-sufficient entrepreneurs in agriculture.
According to Massandje Litsé Touré, ECOWAS Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, the initiative is a strategic move to enhance productivity and competitiveness in the sector.
“Training young people is an investment in our collective future. It equips them with the tools to transform agriculture, enhance productivity, and strengthen sector competitiveness. It also addresses youth unemployment by fostering self-employment and entrepreneurship.” she stated.
With 40% of the beneficiaries being women, the program also aims to promote gender inclusion in agriculture.
The funds will be distributed across various training centers, including Songhai Centers, national agronomic research institutions, and organic farming initiatives.
This investment follows a previous $1 million allocation in 2023 and aligns with ECOWAS’ broader vision of inclusive and innovative agricultural development.
