In a major step toward enhancing cross-Mediterranean digital infrastructure, Sparkle, Italy’s top international service provider, and Algérie Télécom, Algeria’s leading telecom operator, have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to build a new subsea cable connecting the two countries. The project was unveiled during the 6th Italy-Algeria Business Forum held in Rome, with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in attendance.

The planned high-capacity submarine cable is set to deliver ultra-low latency, improved performance, and full redundancy, significantly enhancing connectivity between Europe and North Africa. It is designed to serve both consumer and enterprise demands for fast and reliable internet, while also meeting the growing demand for digital services and content in Algeria.

Beyond just a cable, the partnership includes a suite of strategic digital services. Sparkle will provide cybersecurity and cloud computing solutions, technical support for the development of data centers, and training programs focused on advanced ICT skills. The agreement also includes the establishment of a dedicated European point of presence for Algerie Telecom to enhance its international reach.

“This agreement marks a significant step in strengthening digital ties between Europe and North Africa,” said Enrico Bagnasco, CEO of Sparkle. “We are proud to contribute to Algeria’s digital future by delivering modern infrastructure as well as innovative and secure solutions for fast and resilient international connectivity.”

For Algérie Télécom, the deal signals a strategic move toward diversifying its international traffic routes and future-proofing its services. “The strategic partnership with Sparkle confirms the long-standing relationship between our two companies and reflects our shared commitment to innovation and excellence,” said CEO Adel Bentoumi.

The Italy-Algeria Business Forum serves as a key platform for advancing cooperation in priority sectors such as innovation, energy, and education. This latest agreement supports the broader objectives of Italy’s Mattei Plan for Africa, aimed at building equitable and mutually beneficial partnerships across the continent.

With this bold investment in digital infrastructure, Italy and Algeria are not just linking continents; they are building a foundation for shared growth in the digital age.
