Ghana and Singapore have entered a new phase of partnership that blends climate action with economic transformation, following bilateral talks between President John Dramani Mahama and Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam on Wednesday.

At the heart of the discussions was Singapore’s trailblazing role as the first Asian nation to sign a carbon credit agreement with Ghana, the first of its kind in Africa. President Shanmugaratnam described the deal as a gateway for channeling green investment into low-carbon growth.

Beyond climate finance, both leaders spotlighted agribusiness as a pillar of cooperation, with Singapore expressing keen interest in the downstream processing of cashew, cocoa, and other commodities. Mahama emphasized that Ghana is positioning agriculture not only as a driver of food security but also as a major job creator under his Reset Agenda and 24-hour economy programme.

“Ghana has more than enough arable land for farming. Along the Volta River alone, we have over 2 million hectares earmarked for agro-processing parks and irrigated farms,” Mahama said, describing the Volta Economic Corridor as a potential “game changer” for industrialized agriculture.

He further underscored the role of creative and digital services as a rapid job creator, noting that the sector generates employment five times faster than traditional industries. Singapore pledged support to develop small and medium enterprises in both the green and digital economies.

Framing the partnership within Africa’s wider economic integration under the AfCFTA, Mahama stressed Ghana’s readiness to turn recent economic stabilization into sustainable, job-rich growth.

He congratulated Singapore on its 60th independence anniversary while affirming that Ghana is “resetting for growth through green finance, agro-industrialisation and digital transformation.”
