In an era where global delivery giants have scaled back in African markets, Lagos-based Chowdeck is defying the odds and winning big. The homegrown food delivery platform has secured $9 million in Series A funding to fuel its rapid expansion in Nigeria and Ghana, cementing its position as a local champion in a challenging industry.

Led by Novastar Ventures, with backing from Y Combinator, AAIC Investment, Rebel Fund, GFR Fund, Kaleo, HoaQ, and others, the equity raise will power Chowdeck’s ambitious quick commerce strategy, including the rollout of 40 dark stores and hyperlocal hubs by year-end and 500 by 2026.

Founded in 2021 by Femi Aluko, Olumide Ojo, and Lanre Yusuf, Chowdeck has a profitable model in just four years, a rare feat in the food delivery space. Operating in 11 cities, it serves 1.5 million customers through a fleet of 20,000 riders, with an average delivery time of 30 minutes; half of dense-area trips are completed by bicycle.

The company’s momentum is striking: in 2024, the value of meals delivered increased by more than sixfold year-over-year, and by mid-2025, it had already surpassed its total for the previous year. Expansion into Ghana in May resulted in 1,000 daily orders within three months, achieved without any paid advertising, with a target of 5,000 daily orders by September 2025.

Beyond delivery, Chowdeck recently acquired point-of-sale provider Mira to enhance restaurant operations, underscoring its strategy to own the full value chain.

“Every new market we enter reaches profitability within weeks,” said CEO Femi Aluko. “This funding will supercharge our growth, enabling us to move faster, expand our grocery footprint, and cut delivery times even further.”

Novastar Ventures partner Brian Waswani Odhiambo hailed the company’s execution power and sustainability ethos, calling Chowdeck “the future of logistics for African cities.”
