In a major stride toward reducing childhood deaths, the Government of Uganda has launched a nationwide malaria vaccination campaign, targeting over one million children under the age of two. The campaign, which officially began in Apac District on Wednesday, introduces the R21/Matrix-M vaccine as part of routine immunization efforts.

Rather than solely focusing on disease prevention, the campaign signals a wider push to combat child mortality, especially in districts with the highest malaria burden. Apac District, the site of the campaign’s launch, is one of the world’s most malaria-prone regions, with residents suffering more than 1,500 mosquito bites annually.

Health experts believe that the four-dose vaccine administered at 6, 7, 8, and 18 months could be a game-changer. “This vaccine is expected to save families approximately UGX 15,000 per case, helping to alleviate the financial burden associated with severe malaria treatment,” said Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero, Uganda’s Minister of Health.

The campaign spans 105 districts classified as high or moderate malaria transmission zones and is supported by global health agencies, including UNICEF, WHO, and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.

UNICEF Representative Dr. Robin Nandy emphasized that the vaccine is most effective when combined with other preventive measures. “Parents must complete the full four-dose schedule to ensure children are protected,” he urged.

Dr. Kasonde Mwinga, WHO’s representative in Uganda, hailed the rollout as a historic moment. “This marks a historic turning point in Uganda’s fight against malaria.” He said.

With more than 2.2 million doses already distributed and widespread community mobilization underway, Uganda now joins countries like Ghana, Kenya, and Malawi that are using the malaria vaccine to drastically cut childhood mortality.

As Uganda intensifies its efforts, the success of this campaign could serve as a model for other nations battling the deadly impact of malaria on children.
