The Ugandan government is set to transform the lives of refugees by equipping them with essential digital skills, paving the way for economic independence and better job opportunities.

Through the Uganda Digital Accelerated Project (UDAP-GovNet), the government aims to bridge the digital divide by improving internet access and providing training in 12 refugee-hosting districts.

The program, led by the Ministry of ICT and the National Information Technology Authority (NITA-U), will be implemented by the Uganda Institute of Communication Technology (UICT).

Dr. Irene Nakiyimba, a senior official at UICT, highlighted the significance of this initiative during an alumni event in Kampala on February 22. She emphasized that the project will not only enhance digital literacy among refugees but also empower them to start businesses, access government services, and integrate more effectively into the economy.

“The refugee programme is part of the Uganda Digital Accelerated Project (UDAP-GovNet). UICT will implement the capacity-building and skills development component targeting marginalised groups including refugees,” she said.

With over 800,000 refugees in Uganda, many face challenges in securing employment and education. By providing affordable digital tools and training, the initiative aims to change this reality, fostering self-reliance and innovation within refugee communities.

Beyond refugee support, the project aligns with Uganda’s broader vision of becoming a digitally advanced nation. Government agencies are working together to expand internet coverage, improve access to mobile devices, and promote financial management and environmental safety as part of the program’s long-term sustainability.

This initiative marks a major step in leveraging technology to create opportunities, ensuring that no one—regardless of their background—is left behind in Uganda’s digital transformation journey.
