The South African National Space Agency (SANSA) is reinforcing its position as a key player in global space exploration by providing crucial ground support for the Intuitive Machines-2 (IM-2) lunar mission.

As part of its role, SANSA is using its Hartebeesthoek ground station to track and communicate with the spacecraft, ensuring seamless telemetry and command operations.

This collaboration highlights South Africa’s growing contribution to international space missions and technological advancements.

According to Tiaan Strydom, SANSA’s acting executive director for space operations, the mission presents a valuable opportunity to showcase the agency’s expertise.

“Lunar missions like IM-2 are a unique opportunity for SANSA to showcase its capabilities and contribute meaningfully to the global space community. Our preparations for this mission are designed to ensure excellence and seamless support services for the contracted duration of the mission,” he stated.

IM-2, launched on February 26 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, is tasked with investigating the presence of water ice near the Moon’s south pole—an essential step toward enabling future human exploration.

SANSA has been tracking the spacecraft since it entered its coverage zone and will continue to provide support following the anticipated landing of the Athena lander.

This marks SANSA’s continued involvement with Intuitive Machines, having previously supported the IM-1 mission. By participating in such high-profile projects, SANSA is positioning South Africa as a vital partner in the global space industry.e
