Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have taken a significant step in enhancing their aviation partnership with the signing of an amended Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA). The agreement, aimed at expanding air connectivity and fostering greater collaboration between both nations, was signed by Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, and UAE’s Minister of Economy, Abdulla Bin Touq Al Marri.

The signing took place on the sidelines of the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s (ICAO) Global Implementation Support Symposium 2025, held at the Emirates Palace, Mandarin Oriental, in Abu Dhabi. The high-profile event brought together over 35 ministers, representatives from 191 countries, and more than 1,500 aviation professionals, reinforcing its importance in shaping the future of global aviation.

According to an official statement from the Nigerian ministry, the amended BASA agreement builds on previous negotiations to ensure equal operational rights for both countries and promote deeper cooperation in the aviation sector. Minister Keyamo emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening air connectivity with the UAE, highlighting plans to expand codeshare agreements and interlining opportunities for Nigerian airlines.

UAE’s Minister of Economy, Abdulla Bin Touq Al Marri, acknowledged Nigeria’s dedication to fostering aviation relations, stating, “The Nigerian Aviation Minister is a man who keeps his words, and for us, that’s everything.” His remarks underscored the growing trust and cooperation between the two nations.

Beyond the BASA agreement, Minister Keyamo used the opportunity to advocate for a review of UAE visa restrictions on Nigerian travelers. He stressed that easing visa conditions would not only increase passenger traffic on designated routes but also boost economic benefits for both countries.

In another positive development, both nations agreed to sign a Technical Cooperation Agreement focused on capacity building and technical support in crucial aviation areas, including safety regulations, environmental sustainability, airport facilitation, and security. This initiative aligns with Nigeria’s broader strategy to elevate its aviation sector to global best practices while reinforcing its partnerships with key international players.

This renewed partnership marks a milestone in Nigeria-UAE relations, ensuring a more dynamic and mutually beneficial aviation framework that will enhance connectivity, facilitate trade, and drive economic growth between both nations.
