Nigeria has taken a major step in its green energy transition as the APPL Hydropolis Project receives the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC). The recognition positions Nigeria as a leader in sustainable industrialization and clean energy solutions in Africa.
The ISCC certification, issued by Baltic Control Certification Denmark, confirms that the Hydropolis Project meets international standards for Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO), greenhouse gas (GHG) calculations, and sustainability criteria. This achievement highlights Nigeria’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and integrating into the global clean energy ecosystem.
The Hydropolis Project is a collaborative initiative that brings together local and international experts in renewable energy, including firms from Denmark, Norway, and Germany. The project aims to accelerate the adoption of low-carbon energy solutions, particularly in hydrogen technology, sustainable logistics, and modular green energy systems.
Speaking at the certification ceremony, Nigeria’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, emphasized the country’s resolve to balance industrial development with environmental responsibility.
“This is more than a celebration of certification. It is a powerful symbol of what is possible when African-led innovation meets global cooperation,” Nnaji.m stated. “Under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, we are determined to ensure that industrial growth and climate responsibility go hand in hand.”
This multinational partnership underscores the potential of Africa’s clean energy sector, demonstrating that large-scale, sustainable industrial projects are not only feasible but also globally competitive.
With the ISCC certification in place, the Hydropolis Project is set to become a key driver of industrial decarbonization, green infrastructure, and job creation. The Nigerian government has pledged regulatory support, incentives, and enabling policies to ensure the project’s long-term success.
“This project is a beacon for Africa,” the Minister noted. “It tells the world that we are not just participating in the global green economy we are ready to lead it.”
By securing international recognition, the APPL Hydropolis Project strengthens Nigeria’s position in the global transition toward renewable energy, proving that Africa is not just a participant in the clean energy movement it is a leader.
