Nigeria is embracing cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence geospatial analytics and satellite-based climate tools to transform its agricultural sector and achieve food security Vice President Kashim Shettima announced at the United Nations Food Systems Summit Stocktake (UNFSS+4) in Addis Ababa on July 28.

Speaking to global leaders Shettima outlined Nigeria’s ambitious strategy to enhance transparency connect farmers to markets and reduce waste across the agricultural value chain. “The Fourth Industrial Revolution has gifted us tools once confined to imagination” Shettima said emphasizing how AI and satellite-driven intelligence are revolutionizing Nigeria’s approach to agriculture. These technologies enable real-time monitoring of crop production streamline market access and optimize resource use positioning Nigeria as a leader in climate-smart farming. Local media reported that Shettima described food insecurity as a “shared affliction” urging African nations to unite in building resilient food systems.

Nigeria’s efforts extend beyond technology with the National Food Systems Transformation Pathway driving the cultivation of staple crops like maize rice cassava and wheat. Strategic partnerships with the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) are fueling investments in agro-industrial zones designed to boost rural economies and improve market access. The Presidential Initiative on Food Security further prioritizes financial inclusion for farmers particularly women and youth to ensure inclusive growth.

Shettima highlighted Nigeria’s Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones as engines of rural transformation creating jobs and enhancing food production. He called for collective action across Africa to strengthen agricultural systems stating “A broken food system anywhere diminishes humanity.” With these initiatives Nigeria aims to ensure food security as a fundamental right fostering a future where no child goes to bed hungry.
