The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) is set to make history as it nears completion of Nigeria’s first indigenous helicopter, marking a major milestone in the country’s aerospace and engineering industry.

With the development of both a made-in-Nigeria helicopter and advanced Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), NASENI is positioning the nation as a key player in aerospace technology.

Engr. Kareem Aduagba, Project Manager at NASENI’s Aeronautics and Air Vehicle Development Institute in Kaduna, highlighted that the agency is leveraging science and engineering expertise to fast-track the completion of the project.

Rather than starting entirely from scratch, NASENI has been working on both locally developed designs and Semi Knock Down (SKD) as well as Complete Knock Down (CKD) models acquired from developed countries.

This strategy has allowed the agency to refine its manufacturing capabilities while integrating indigenous innovations into the aviation sector.

According to Aduagba, the helicopter project is in its final stages, with the first test flight expected soon. “Very soon, we are going to do the first test. Everything is nearing completion now, and very soon, we will fly the first made-in-Nigeria helicopter,” he said.

Beyond technological advancements, the initiative is expected to create employment opportunities, enhance local expertise, and contribute to economic growth.

Aduagba emphasized that increasing awareness of NASENI’s work is crucial to fostering greater acceptance of locally manufactured products. Under the leadership of Executive Vice Chairman Khalil Suleman Halilu, the agency is actively engaging stakeholders and promoting Nigeria’s technological capabilities.

“Innovation and modern technology are key to improving the acceptance of Nigerian products. This kind of engagement will help tackle production challenges and create more job opportunities,” Aduagba noted.

As NASENI pushes forward with its groundbreaking aerospace developments, the successful launch of Nigeria’s first indigenous helicopter could pave the way for more locally engineered aircraft, strengthening the nation’s position in global aviation technology.
