Mozambique’s agricultural sector is showing strong signs of recovery, with vegetable and horticultural exports surging by 24% in 2024 to reach USD 167 million (€142.4 million), according to a report by the country’s central bank. The increase marks a significant turnaround from the setbacks of 2023, when severe weather conditions disrupted farming activity and distribution channels.

Bananas, one of Mozambique’s key traditional exports, also saw a strong performance, generating USD 37 million (€31.5 million) in revenue, up from USD 32 million in the previous year. The bulk of these exports were purchased by neighboring countries, particularly South Africa, which remains a top regional market.

The export boost is largely credited to the normalization of weather patterns and improved production conditions. However, former Minister of Agriculture Celso Correia warned that the country must not become complacent. Speaking in November 2024, he projected a 5% growth in the agricultural campaign, thanks to better rainfall. Still, he acknowledged Mozambique’s continued reliance on imports, especially in the southern regions.

While the surge in exports is promising, Mozambique now faces the pressing task of investing in year-round production technologies and enhancing competitiveness to achieve agricultural self-sufficiency and food security.
