The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has launched a historic nationwide audit of the country’s airspace, the first in its 25-year history, aimed at modernizing operations and aligning with global aviation standards.

The exercise, which commenced on Tuesday, covers the Kano Flight Information Region and effectively spans all of Nigeria’s airspace. According to spokesperson Abdullahi Musa, the audit will assess safety, efficiency, and regulatory compliance while preparing the agency for both the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority’s certification and upcoming International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) missions.

NAMA’s Managing Director, Farouk Umar, described the initiative as transformative, emphasizing its role in strengthening Nigeria’s position in global aviation. This audit is not just compliance; it’s a bold step toward building resilient, world-class air navigation systems that reflect transparency, accountability, and operational excellence,” he said.

The audit will deploy cutting-edge technologies and involve detailed inspections across critical areas, including Air Traffic Services, Communication, Navigation and Surveillance systems, Aeronautical Information Management, and Search and Rescue operations. It will also extend to major international airports in Lagos, Abuja, Kano, and Port Harcourt, as well as regional hubs such as Enugu and Maiduguri.

To drive the process, Umar inaugurated a special FIR Audit Committee led by the Director of Special Duties, Ahmad Abba, comprising experts from key departments.

With this landmark move, NAMA is positioning Nigeria’s skies for safer travel, smarter navigation, and stronger global recognition.
