Julius Malema, president of South Africa’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), delivered a powerful call for a united, borderless Africa during a keynote address at the Nigeria Bar Association’s Annual General Conference in Enugu on August 24. Speaking to thousands of lawyers and dignitaries, the 44-year-old firebrand politician advocated for a single African president, currency, parliament, and military command to strengthen the continent’s global standing.

“We demand one Africa, a borderless continent with one voice,” Malema declared, rejecting “colonial” boundaries that divide Africa’s 54 sovereign states. He envisioned a unified currency stronger than the U.S. dollar and urged Africans to resist external exploitation. “Africa is not a dark continent but a shining nation rich in diamonds and minerals,” he said, emphasizing the need for local industries to process resources and drive prosperity.

Malema championed visa-free movement across Africa, stating, “Africans should not need visas to visit one another.” He highlighted Nigeria and South Africa’s pivotal roles in leading industrialization and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), praising their historic solidarity during the anti-apartheid struggle. He also condemned xenophobia, particularly in South Africa, as a “sickness” fueled by poverty and inequality, urging Africans to unite against division.

Criticizing reckless borrowing from global lenders like the World Bank, Malema called for stricter regulations to safeguard economic sovereignty. “Our salvation lies in Lagos, Johannesburg, Abuja, and Pretoria,” he said, rallying for self-reliance and unity. Posts on X echoed his vision, with users lauding his push for African solidarity and economic empowerment.
