The 3rd edition of the prestigious iKon Awards in Kampala was a night of celebration for African cinema, with Nollywood legends Kanayo O Kanayo and Patience Ozokwor receiving the esteemed African Ikon of the Year honors.

Held at the Kampala Serena Hotel, the event not only recognized Uganda’s top film industry players but also underscored the continent’s growing influence in global entertainment.

The ceremony brought together key figures from Uganda’s creative sector and beyond. Nigerian actor Ramsey Nouah was among the special guests, alongside Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) Executive Director Nyombi Thembo, Reach A Hand Uganda Board Member George Kigozi, and Presidential Advisor on Creatives Eddy Kenzo. Humphrey Nabimanya, founder of the iKon Awards, was also present.

In his acceptance speech, Kanayo O Kanayo highlighted the economic potential of the African film industry. He encouraged Ugandan filmmakers to embrace collaboration and investment, noting that Nigeria’s success in Nollywood serves as an example for other nations.

“Wherever you go in the world, Nigeria stands tall. When you board a flight from Uganda to New York, you watch Nigerian movies on Netflix, Showmax, and in cinemas. What does that tell you? Film is the new oil. We have achieved this in Nigeria, and Uganda can do the same by collaborating and building strong partnerships,” he said.

The night also marked a significant milestone for Uganda’s film industry with the announcement of the Uganda Film Producers Guild by veteran actor and producer Mathew Nabwiso. This initiative is expected to further professionalize and strengthen the sector.

The iKon Awards, Uganda’s biggest annual celebration of film and television, continue to shine a spotlight on the country’s creative talent. Sponsored by Startimes, Uganda Airlines, UNESCO, Reach A Hand Uganda, ATS, Sauti Plus Media Hub, Print Creations, V&A, Kampala Serena Hotel, Divine Resort, Aquafina, and Radiant, the event reaffirmed the power of storytelling in shaping Africa’s cultural and economic landscape.
