Jim Ovia, CFR, Founder and Chairman of Zenith Bank Plc, has ascended into the distinguished league of global trailblazers as he was conferred with the prestigious Freedom of the City of London a rare honor dating back to the 13th century during a grand ceremony held at the historic Mansion House in the heart of the United Kingdom’s financial capital.
The honour, rooted in centuries-old tradition, has evolved into a symbolic recognition bestowed on individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to society. In receiving the accolade, Ovia joins the ranks of revered figures such as Nelson Mandela, Sir Winston Churchill, Desmond Tutu, Bill Gates, Harry Kane, and Morgan Freeman an illustrious roll call of change-makers and visionaries.
Jim Ovia was honoured not only for his remarkable achievements in banking and economic development but also for his expansive philanthropic legacy and role in championing African excellence on the global stage.

The historic event attracted an array of high-profile dignitaries, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR; Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu; Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori; Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah; and Africa’s richest man, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, GCON. Also present were key figures from Nigeria’s political, traditional, and corporate spheres, including the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, CFR, and His Eminence John Cardinal Onaiyekan.
Jim Ovia’s latest recognition adds to a growing list of accolades that celebrate his influence across banking, education, and philanthropy. He holds the national honours of Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) and the National Productivity Order of Merit (NPOM), both received in 2022.
He was named Banker of the Year in 2007 and Titan of the Year in 2024 by ThisDay newspaper, and has been lauded with the African Business Leader Award by the Africa-America Institute. Ovia also holds honorary doctorate degrees from the University of Lagos and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
