The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, has expressed strong confidence in Ethiopia’s economic trajectory and its growing influence within Africa. Concluding her two-day visit to the country, Georgieva highlighted Ethiopia’s impressive economic progress, attributing it to key macroeconomic reforms and government efforts to foster private sector participation.

During a press briefing, she noted that Ethiopia’s GDP growth reached 8.1 percent last year, surpassing the initial projection of 6.1 percent. This achievement, she explained, reflects improved productivity across agriculture, industry, and service sectors.

Georgieva emphasized the transformative potential of Ethiopia’s ongoing economic reforms and reaffirmed the IMF’s commitment to supporting these efforts. She cited the IMF’s largest-ever concessional financing program—amounting to 3.5 billion USD—as a demonstration of trust in Ethiopia’s economic agenda and its commitment to sustainable growth.

“The reform program that Ethiopia has embraced is tough and requires time, but it promises significant rewards. Some positive outcomes are already emerging, and it is crucial for the society to remain united behind these reforms,” she stated.

Beyond economic discussions, Georgieva also acknowledged Ethiopia’s rich historical legacy. During her visit to the Adwa Memorial Museum, she expressed admiration for Ethiopia’s historical role in inspiring African resilience and confidence.

Georgieva’s visit underscores the IMF’s ongoing support for Ethiopia as the country navigates its economic transformation, positioning itself as a key player in the region’s development.
