Ghana’s Naomi Oyoe Ohene Oti has achieved international acclaim by winning the coveted 2025 Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award, triumphing over 100,000 applicants from 199 countries. The award, which includes a $250,000 prize, was presented in a grand ceremony in Dubai by the UAE’s Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan.

A trailblazer in oncology care, Ohene Oti currently serves as the head of nursing at the National Radiotherapy Oncology and Nuclear Medicine Centre at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra. Her groundbreaking work in cancer treatment and nurse education has transformed oncology nursing in Ghana and set a new benchmark across the African continent.

At the heart of her mission is a bold vision to bridge cancer care disparities through advanced nurse training and international collaboration. She was instrumental in launching specialized oncology nursing programs in partnership with renowned institutions, including Canada’s Cross Cancer Institute.

Her efforts have not only expanded the capacity of cancer care in Ghana but have also empowered a new generation of oncology nurses, equipping them to tackle the region’s growing cancer burden.

The ceremony also featured a message from WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who lauded nurses like Ohene Oti as the backbone of healthcare systems worldwide.

Naomi’s global recognition arrives at a time when the world is increasingly acknowledging the indispensable role of nurses in delivering equitable and life-saving care. Her victory stands as a powerful testament to the impact of dedicated, visionary nursing leadership in transforming health outcomes.
