Ethiopia has taken a major step in the fight against human trafficking by launching its first-ever national hotline, 8797, to support vulnerable individuals and combat irregular migration.
The toll-free service, available in Amharic, Afan Oromo, English, and Tigrigna, provides critical information on safe migration, legal assistance, and mental health support. It aims to protect people at risk of exploitation and those already affected by trafficking.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Justice in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), is part of a broader national strategy to address human trafficking. The hotline also connects callers with existing services for health information, legal aid, and gender-based violence support.
H.E. Belayhun Yirga, State Minister of the Ministry of Justice, emphasized that the hotline is a key tool in Ethiopia’s commitment to combating human trafficking and ensuring justice for victims. IOM Ethiopia’s Chief of Mission, Abibatou Wane, described it as a “lifeline” for those in danger and a crucial step toward strengthening Ethiopia’s migration management system.
In addition to the hotline, IOM has helped develop a training guide for operators, ensuring effective assistance for callers. The initiative aligns with Ethiopia’s National Referral Mechanism and National Partnership Coalition, which bring together government agencies and partners to tackle human trafficking.
By enhancing coordination between stakeholders and improving victim support, Ethiopia is reinforcing its commitment to protecting vulnerable communities and addressing the root causes of unsafe migration.
