In a continent-wide race to transform agriculture, Ethiopia has surged ahead, setting the benchmark for success under the Comprehensive African Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) the African Union’s flagship initiative to end hunger and drive agriculture-led economic growth.

According to recent evaluations by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Ethiopia’s commitment to agricultural innovation and climate resilience has not only accelerated national development but is now shaping best practices for the rest of Africa.

“In recent years, Ethiopia has significantly enhanced agricultural output, especially in wheat production. Since 2022, Ethiopia has successfully substituted wheat imports and has also achieved notable gains in livestock productivity through initiatives like the Bounty of Basket.” said Zena Habtewold, Advisor to the Agriculture Minister and CAADP Focal Person.

A standout success story is Ethiopia’s wheat revolution. Since 2022, the nation has moved from being a major wheat importer to achieving self-sufficiency, thanks to targeted policies and strategic investments. Initiatives like the “Bounty of Basket” have further boosted livestock yields, improving food security and rural livelihoods.

At the heart of this transformation lies the Green Legacy Initiative, Ethiopia’s flagship climate action program. Recognized globally, this campaign has increased forest coverage from 17% to over 23% and is being replicated across the continent.

“The Green Legacy has played a critical role in combating climate change, increasing our forest coverage from 17% to over 23%. This is an inspiring example for the continent,” Zena noted.

Ethiopia’s model aligns perfectly with CAADP’s goals: enhancing agricultural productivity, reducing poverty, and building resilience against climate shocks. Through a combination of modern farming techniques, disaster preparedness systems, and inclusive investments, the country is setting a standard that others are keen to emulate.

As African nations gear up to meet the ambitious targets of Agenda 2063, Ethiopia’s momentum offers a beacon of hope and a blueprint for transformation.

Ethiopia’s agricultural journey is far from over but its direction is clear. The seeds of progress have been sown, and the harvest is already inspiring a continent.
