In a landmark move set to reshape the trajectory of their development journeys, Ethiopia and Vietnam are forging a bold new partnership centered on building green, inclusive, and technology-driven economies.

The announcement follows Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s (PhD) official visit to Vietnam, where both nations reaffirmed their shared vision for environmental sustainability, clean energy, and digital innovation.

Speaking at a press briefing, State Minister of Finance Eyob Tekalign (PhD) emphasized Ethiopia’s determination to learn from Vietnam’s extraordinary economic transformation.

“Just two to three decades ago, Vietnam was a war-torn country. Today, it is a thriving middle-income economy and a global manufacturing hub,” Eyob stated. “Vietnam’s experience driven by visionary leadership and strong public engagement offers valuable lessons for Ethiopia as we pursue our own path toward sustainable development.”

Highlighting a growing synergy between the two countries, officials underscored common goals in areas such as smart urbanization, eco-friendly infrastructure, and green industrialization. “Ethiopia’s vision to build clean, green, and sustainable cities mirrors Vietnam’s path,” Eyob added.

Fiseha Yitagesu (PhD), Executive Manager of the Industrial Parks Development Corporation, echoed this sentiment, praising Vietnam’s industrial success. “Vietnam has demonstrated how small-scale industries can be scaled into globally competitive manufacturing powerhouses. Its ability to attract foreign direct investment and become a preferred destination for investors is exemplary,” he noted.

With both countries prioritizing innovation, green transition, and digital transformation, the groundwork is being laid for deep collaboration. Joint initiatives will focus on renewable energy, digital technology, smart agriculture, and sustainable manufacturing pillars seen as critical to long-term economic resilience.

“Strengthening cooperation in these areas will not only drive environmentally friendly growth but also create significant employment opportunities,” Fiseha said.

The Ethiopia-Vietnam partnership is being hailed as a strategic alliance for the future one that blends ambition with action in the face of global climate and economic challenges. As the two countries tap into each other’s strengths, officials believe they can accelerate the journey toward greener, smarter, and more inclusive economies.
