Emirates SkyCargo, the cargo division of Emirates Airlines, has entered into a strategic partnership with Astral Aviation, a leading African cargo carrier, to strengthen trade flows to and from the continent. The two airlines signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the Air Cargo Africa event, marking a significant step in bolstering Africa’s role in global trade.
The collaboration will leverage Astral Aviation’s extensive intra-Africa network, which spans 50 destinations through scheduled and charter services, alongside Emirates SkyCargo’s global reach of over 145 destinations. Together, the airlines aim to enhance connectivity, expand cargo interline options, and establish block space agreements to support African businesses in accessing international markets.
Both carriers bring specialized expertise in handling sensitive cargo, including perishable goods like fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as lifesaving pharmaceuticals—key commodities in Africa’s trade ecosystem.
Badr Abbas, Divisional Senior Vice President of Emirates SkyCargo, emphasized the continent’s growth potential, stating, “Africa is home to 11 of the world’s 20 fastest-growing economies, and its bold trade ambitions present immense opportunities. With our global network, all-widebody fleet, and specialized product portfolio, we are uniquely positioned to help businesses connect with suppliers and customers worldwide. This partnership with Astral Aviation reinforces our commitment to fostering economic growth and ensuring efficient, reliable trade flows.”
Sanjeev Gadhia, CEO of Astral Aviation, highlighted the significance of the agreement, saying, “This MoU marks a pivotal moment in our 15-year commercial partnership with Emirates SkyCargo. It reflects our shared vision to elevate air cargo solutions across Africa and beyond. Together, we will drive innovation, unlock new opportunities, and strengthen global trade connectivity.”
The partnership comes on the heels of the UAE and Kenya signing a landmark Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), aimed at accelerating trade and investment in key sectors such as agriculture, infrastructure, healthcare, and renewable energy. This collaboration between Emirates SkyCargo and Astral Aviation further underscores the growing importance of Africa as a dynamic player in the global economy.
By combining their strengths, the two airlines aim to create mutually beneficial economic opportunities, ensuring goods move swiftly and efficiently across borders while supporting Africa’s rising prominence in international trade.
