In a strategic move to position Egypt as a key player in the global solar energy market, Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli discussed plans to establish a large-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) glass manufacturing facility in the country.

The project, spearheaded by China-based SBH Kibing Solar New Energy, involves a $700 million investment and will be located in the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone).

During a meeting with William Chen, Chairman of SBH Kibing Solar New Energy, Madbouli emphasized Egypt’s commitment to attracting foreign investments in renewable energy and industrial localization. He highlighted the strong economic and political ties between Egypt and China, which have fostered several successful joint ventures.

The planned factory is set to become a major production hub, with most of its output designated for export. The project will be developed in two phases, with an annual production capacity of 1.53 million tons of solar panel glass and 1.08 million tons of high-purity silica sand.

Chairman of the SCZone Authority Walid Gamal Eldin noted that SBH Kibing Solar New Energy is one of the top three global manufacturers of solar panel glass, and its investment in Egypt will significantly enhance the country’s renewable energy supply chain.

Chen stated that the company is currently in the process of securing the necessary permits and is keen to collaborate with the Egyptian government on manufacturing other specialized glass types. He also discussed the project’s logistical requirements, including power, gas supplies, and silica sand needed for production.

This initiative aligns with Egypt’s broader strategy to localize advanced industries, boost exports, and strengthen its role as a manufacturing hub for the renewable energy sector.
