Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf and Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timotheos
In a landmark move signaling a new era of African cooperation, Algeria and Ethiopia signed 13 strategic cooperation agreements on Monday, aiming to supercharge economic ties and enhance their continental influence. The accords were finalized during the fifth session of the Algerian Ethiopian Joint Committee held in Algiers underscoring the countries’ shared ambition to position themselves as key drivers of Africa’s transformation.
From pharmaceuticals to space sciences, energy to education, the sweeping agreements cover a range of high-impact sectors. The signing ceremony was jointly presided over by Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf and Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timotheos, who emphasized the historic nature of the partnership and its long-term significance for African development.
The ministers held a closed-door meeting before the ceremony, where they exchanged views on pressing global and continental developments, affirming their countries’ aligned positions on issues of peace, security, and sustainable growth.
A joint communiqué issued after the talks reaffirmed both nations’ dedication to multilateralism, pan-African solidarity, and their commitment to promoting peace, freedom, and justice. The communiqué also called for intensified coordination in international forums to amplify African voices and interests on the global stage.
The high-level engagements came amid Algeria’s diplomatic ascent within the African Union, where it secured a seat on the AU’s influential Peace and Security Council (PSC) representing North Africa. Algeria’s victory, clinched with 34 votes, followed Morocco’s withdrawal from a previously three-way contest that also involved Libya.
This diplomatic win, combined with the flurry of bilateral agreements, cements a growing Algeria-Ethiopia axis that could become a powerful force for economic and political integration across the continent.
Analysts view the developments as part of a broader effort by both nations to champion African-led solutions and resist foreign dependency. As two of Africa’s largest economies and most politically assertive states, Algeria and Ethiopia’s strengthened alliance could signal a shift toward greater continental collaboration and unity in action.
