Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has called for a transformative overhaul of global governance, financial systems, and healthcare frameworks to prioritize equity and inclusion for low-income and emerging economies, particularly in Africa. Speaking at the 17th Global South and Emerging Economies (BRICS) Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Tinubu emphasized the need for fairer systems to address environmental degradation, climate crises, and healthcare disparities, according to a statement by his Special Adviser on Information & Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Invited by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva, Tinubu highlighted Nigeria’s alignment with BRICS’ focus on equitable global development. Admitted as a BRICS partner country in January 2025 alongside nations like Cuba and Malaysia, Nigeria is leveraging its status as Africa’s economic powerhouse to advocate for South-South cooperation. “Africa contributes the least to global emissions but suffers the most,” Tinubu said, urging accessible financing and sustainable technology transfers to empower emerging economies.

Tinubu praised initiatives like the African Carbon Market Initiative and the Great Green Wall, expressing optimism that the upcoming COP-30 will strengthen global environmental strategies. He underscored Nigeria’s commitment to renewable energy, climate action, and universal health coverage, aligning with the country’s Vision 2050 and nationally determined contributions. “We are not passive participants but architects of a future addressing our youth’s needs,” he said, noting that 70% of Nigeria’s population is young.

The president also called for collective action on non-communicable diseases, positioning BRICS as a beacon for innovative solutions rooted in solidarity and sustainability. “Nigeria is committed to strategic collaboration for inclusive development,” he affirmed, reinforcing Nigeria’s role in reforming global governance during Brazil’s BRICS presidency.

Accompanied by Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar and Finance Minister Wale Edun, Tinubu’s participation underscores Nigeria’s growing influence in global forums. As the world’s sixth-most populous nation, Nigeria shares BRICS’ priorities of fostering economic resilience and cooperation. The summit, hosted by Brazil, celebrated Nigeria’s formal admission as a partner country, marking a new chapter in its advocacy for a more inclusive global order.
