Dakar, Senegal — TikTok superstar Khaby Lame, known worldwide for his silent yet expressive videos, has taken on a powerful new role as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador—a move that amplifies his influence beyond social media and into global humanitarian work.
The 24-year-old social media icon, who boasts over 162 million followers, returned to his native Senegal for a four-day visit, where he met with young changemakers and shared his personal journey from childhood struggles to internet stardom. The trip culminated in his official appointment by UNICEF, an organization dedicated to improving the lives of children worldwide.
For Lame, the honor is deeply personal. Born in Senegal, he moved to Italy as a toddler with his working-class parents but spent years as a stateless resident before finally receiving Italian citizenship at 20. His experience of poverty, uncertainty, and perseverance has shaped his outlook, and now, as a UNICEF ambassador, he hopes to inspire young people facing similar hardships.
“It’s a true honor to be appointed as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador and be part of an organization that puts children’s rights front and center every day, from my own experience as a child fearing poverty, struggling to find my passion at school, and losing my job during the COVID-19 pandemic, to finding my place and calling in the world, I know that all children can thrive when they are given a chance and opportunity.” Lame said during his speech in Dakar.
Dressed in an elegant beige suit and tie, Lame addressed an audience of young Senegalese with a message of hope and resilience, urging them to believe in their potential. Despite his meteoric rise to fame, he remains deeply connected to his roots, emphasizing:
“I’ve been in Italy for 20 years since I was only 2 years old, my blood is from Senegal, but I feel Senegalese and Italian at the same time.” Lame said.
His partnership with UNICEF is expected to bring greater awareness to issues affecting youth, particularly in West and Central Africa, and encourage investment in programs that provide education and economic opportunities.
From factory worker to the most-followed TikTok creator, Khaby Lame’s journey is proof that a single idea—executed with authenticity—can change lives. Now, he’s using that influence to change the world for the next generation.
