In a bold move that goes beyond the mic, Grammy-winning singer Tems is stepping into a new spotlight as a changemaker for African women in music. With the launch of The Leading Vibe Initiative, Tems is using her platform to rewrite the narrative and create real opportunities for women across the continent’s music industry.

The groundbreaking initiative is not just about putting more female voices on stage it’s about opening doors behind the scenes too. From songwriters and sound engineers to producers and music tech talents, Leading Vibe is built to equip African women with the skills, tools, and networks they need to thrive in a male-dominated industry.

Tems, known for her haunting vocals and global hits, announced the project on her social media, saying:

“Today, I’m so proud to launch The Leading Vibe. From my self-taught journey with no roadmap, I created this initiative to support African women in music breaking barriers, building boldly, and leading the next wave.”

The first stop on this mission is deeply symbolic: Lagos her hometown and the heart of Nigeria’s booming music scene. Set for August 8–9, the two-day immersive experience will welcome Nigerian women aged 18 to 35 for a dynamic program of workshops, masterclasses, and panel discussions led by respected industry veterans.

More than just training, the initiative promises real industry access: hands-on experience with professional tools, mentorship from top music professionals, and a community of like-minded creatives ready to redefine the future.

Tems’ journey, one that started without formal training or connections, fuels the heart of this vision. Despite Nigeria’s global dominance in music exports, representation of women, particularly behind the scenes, remains sparse. Through Leading Vibe, Tems is creating the space she once searched for.

With ambitions to expand across the continent, The Leading Vibe Initiative is setting the stage for a movement where African women in music are no longer the exception, but the expectation.

Applications are now open and the next generation of leading voices just found their mic.
