Former Super Eagles defender Taye Taiwo has etched his name into Olympique Marseille’s history books, as the French club inducted him into their prestigious Hall of Fame.
Taiwo, who was a mainstay at Marseille from 2005 to 2011, played a pivotal role in the club’s successes during his six-year stint. Renowned for his thunderous left foot and defensive prowess, the Nigerian left-back made 271 appearances, contributing 25 goals and 23 assists—impressive numbers for a defender.
His time at Marseille saw him lift multiple trophies, including the Ligue 1 title in 2010 and three Coupe de la Ligue triumphs. His consistent performances earned him admiration from fans and respect from teammates, solidifying his reputation as one of the finest left-backs to don the club’s colours.
Beyond club football, Taiwo was a key figure for the Nigerian national team, amassing 54 caps between 2004 and 2011 while netting five goals. He represented the Super Eagles at major tournaments, including the Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cup.
After leaving Marseille, he continued his career across top European leagues, featuring for AC Milan, Queens Park Rangers, and several other clubs before retiring in 2019. Now 39, he has settled in France, where his connection with Marseille remains strong.
His recent induction into the club’s Hall of Fame is a testament to his legacy, acknowledging not just his achievements on the pitch but also the lasting impact he left on the Marseille faithful.
