Tanzania is set to develop a modern satellite city in its capital, Dodoma, as part of a strategic push to transform the region into a vibrant administrative and economic hub. The ambitious project, announced on June 2, 2025, aims to accommodate Dodoma’s rapid population growth and support its role as the nation’s political center. The satellite city will feature advanced infrastructure, including residential, commercial, and administrative facilities, to meet the increasing demand for services in the region.

The initiative aligns with Tanzania’s broader vision to modernize Dodoma, which has been the designated capital since 1996, succeeding Dar es Salaam. The Citizen highlights that the project will include state-of-the-art amenities to enhance connectivity and livability, building on ongoing developments like the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) linking Dar es Salaam to Dodoma and the nearly completed Msalato International Airport. These efforts are expected to boost Dodoma’s economy by improving access and attracting investment.

The satellite city is part of a series of infrastructure projects, including road expansions and a Sh513 billion power line (approximately $193 million USD) from Chalinze to Dodoma, aimed at addressing the city’s logistical challenges. Dodoma’s population growth has strained existing infrastructure, particularly in densely populated wards like Majengo and Chamwino, prompting the government to prioritize balanced urban development.

The project, inspired by President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s directive to replicate successful regional developments, is expected to position Dodoma as a model for sustainable urban planning in Africa. With strategic investments and community involvement, the satellite city could redefine Tanzania’s capital, fostering economic resilience and regional connectivity.
