South Africa and the European Union (EU) have reaffirmed their commitment to deeper economic and political cooperation, setting the stage for a high-level EU- South Africa Summit on 13 March 2025.

The renewed partnership was highlighted during the 16th Ministerial Political Dialogue between South Africa and the EU, held on 19 February in Cape Town.

Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, emphasized that the discussions laid the groundwork for enhancing trade, investment, and multilateral collaboration.

“The dialogue presented an opportunity for the EU and South Africa to reiterate their common commitment to multilateralism, rules-based international order, and the centrality of the United Nations (UN) Charter,” Ntshavheni said during a post-cabinet briefing on Thursday.

Key areas of cooperation included sustainable value chains, economic security, and the just energy transition. The dialogue also reinforced shared commitments to multilateralism, human rights, and climate action.

Beyond bilateral relations, both parties stressed the urgency of UN Security Council reform to ensure greater representation and accountability in global governance.

They also underscored the need to advance discussions within the EU- African Union framework, with an EU- AU Ministerial Meeting and Summit planned for later in 2025.

As South Africa prepares to host the upcoming EU-South Africa Summit, the strengthened partnership is expected to play a vital role in shaping economic and geopolitical strategies for both regions.
