Nigeria’s national oil company, NNPC Ltd., has announced a historic breakthrough in safeguarding its crude oil pipelines. This achievement not only signals the end of decades-long oil theft but also sets the stage for Africa’s energy security and economic resilience.

Speaking at the 2025 African Chiefs of Defence Staff Summit, Group Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari revealed that through unprecedented collaboration with security and intelligence agencies, NNPC Ltd. has attained near-100% crude oil pipeline availability.

Ojulari, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the summit alongside Vice President Sen. Kashim Shettima (GCON), emphasized that the success reflects a new model of cooperation between the energy sector and Africa’s defence institutions.

“Our armed forces, intelligence community, and NNPC Ltd. have prioritized safeguarding our national resources, which has yielded transformative results. This unprecedented progress demonstrates the power of collective action against criminal networks that undermine Africa’s economic growth,” Ojulari declared.

For years, crude theft and pipeline vandalism crippled Nigeria’s oil production, costing the country billions of dollars in lost revenue. The latest security turnaround, however, has restored investor confidence and bolstered hopes for record output in the coming months.

The African defence summit, themed “Combating Contemporary Threats to Regional Peace and Security in Africa: The Role of Strategic Defence Collaboration,” brought together chiefs of defence staff and senior leaders from across the continent. Against this backdrop, Ojulari called for deeper cross-border intelligence-sharing and joint operations to secure Africa’s critical energy corridors.

Reinforcing the message on its official X handle, NNPC Ltd. stated: “We achieved near-100% crude oil pipeline availability through strategic collaboration with security agencies. We remain committed to working closely with Nigeria’s defense institutions and our continental partners to safeguard Africa’s energy security and advance shared prosperity.”

The summit concluded with a consensus that true regional stability requires not just military might, but also partnerships that connect security with economic lifelines. By ensuring its pipelines flow uninterrupted, NNPC Ltd. has positioned Nigeria as a catalyst for continental energy growth and a trusted partner in Africa’s collective security agenda.
