Mozambique is charting a bold course toward energy sovereignty and industrial transformation, with the launch of a monumental oil refinery project in partnership with energy giant Aiteo. Touted as a game-changer for the country’s energy and economic landscape, the refinery marks a pivotal investment aimed at unlocking new frontiers in domestic fuel production and industrial growth.

At the heart of the project lies a strategic vision: to position Mozambique as a regional powerhouse in the downstream energy sector while ending decades of overreliance on imported fuels. The new refinery, one of the largest in the Southern African Development Community (SADC), upon completion, will boost domestic refining capacity, catalyze job creation, and anchor broader economic development.

“This EPC contract is not just an agreement, it’s a declaration of Mozambique’s intent to lead,” said Dr. Ransome Owan, Group Managing Director for Infrastructure at Aiteo. “It will empower our local economy, energize industries, and redefine our role in Africa’s energy story.”

Expected to be completed within 24 months, the first phase of the refinery will significantly scale up the country’s ability to produce cleaner fuels and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Officials emphasize that this expansion will provide communities with more affordable, accessible, and environmentally friendly energy alternatives, especially in rural areas where clean cooking solutions remain a pressing health and development challenge.

Beyond its immediate energy benefits, the project symbolizes Mozambique’s deeper commitment to industrial transformation under President Chapo's leadership. It signals a strategic pivot to long-term infrastructure development, economic diversification, and regional energy leadership.

The refinery also arrives at a time when momentum is building across Mozambique’s broader energy portfolio. With global partners like TotalEnergies preparing to restart multi-billion-dollar LNG operations, the country is steadily cementing its role as a critical node in Africa’s future energy matrix.

As construction begins, the refinery stands not just as a physical structure but as a powerful emblem of national ambition, one that reflects Mozambique’s readiness to rise, produce, and power its destiny.
