Morocco is propelling itself and the continent into the fast lane of innovation and infrastructure with the launch of the Kenitra–Marrakech High-Speed Rail Line, a 430-kilometre megaproject poised to become Africa’s longest high-speed railway.

This historic development will seamlessly connect the economic and cultural heartbeats of Morocco Kenitra, Rabat, Casablanca, and Marrakech cutting travel time dramatically while boosting mobility, economic growth, and regional integration.

An ambitious extension of the Tangier–Kenitra line, Africa’s first bullet train launched in 2018 under the name Al Boraq, this new addition will complete a 670-kilometre high-speed corridor from Tangier to Marrakech. Once operational, passengers will glide across this route in under three hours, down from the current four-and-a-half at lightning speeds reaching 350 km/h (217 mph).

Backed by a $9.5 billion investment, the project is a shining example of global collaboration. French rail giant Alstom is providing next-generation trains, while South Korea’s Hyundai Rotem is lending its expertise in infrastructure and engineering. This partnership underscores not only Morocco’s international credibility but also the rising global interest in Africa’s infrastructure potential.

Beyond sleek trains and shortened commutes, the high-speed line is a pillar of Morocco’s national development vision. It’s expected to generate thousands of jobs, unlock local entrepreneurship, and catalyze a surge in tourism and investment, especially in Marrakech a global hotspot for heritage and hospitality.

Equally important, the project aligns with Morocco’s green transition goals. As an eco-conscious alternative to car and air travel, the rail line is projected to significantly reduce carbon emissions and urban congestion, reinforcing Morocco’s position as a leader in sustainable transport innovation.

With the Kenitra–Marrakech line, Morocco is not just changing how people travel it’s reimagining what’s possible for African infrastructure. As rails are laid and milestones reached, this bold move could inspire a continent-wide shift toward high-speed, eco-friendly connectivity.
