Egypt has reaffirmed its dedication to advancing Africa’s development agenda and promoting a fairer global financial system during the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Speaking on behalf of Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty, Deputy Minister Abu Bakr Hefni emphasized Egypt’s strong support for the priorities set by South Africa’s G20 presidency, particularly those aligned with Africa’s Agenda 2063.
Hefni highlighted Egypt’s commitment to working alongside G20 members to drive sustainable development by improving access to financing for developing nations, advocating for debt relief strategies such as debt-for-climate swaps, and leveraging artificial intelligence for economic and social progress.
He underscored the importance of ensuring water and food security, key pillars of Africa’s long-term development, Recognizing the global economic challenges exacerbated by rising protectionist policies, Hefni called for stronger international cooperation to address financial imbalances and create a more inclusive economic system.
He stressed the G20’s potential in shaping policies that guarantee fair lending practices by international financial institutions, ensuring that developing nations are not forced to choose between climate action and sustainable growth.
Additionally, he emphasized the need for responsible debt management to maintain macroeconomic stability in low- and middle-income countries, helping prevent future global debt crises.
Hefni reaffirmed Egypt’s support for South Africa’s leadership in fostering collaboration between the Global North and South, ensuring that developing countries have a stronger voice in shaping international economic policies.
Egypt’s participation in the G20 under South Africa’s invitation reflects its growing role as a key advocate for African priorities on the global stage. The country remains committed to working with international partners to drive inclusive development and financial reform that benefits all.
