In a move set to revolutionize Ghana’s agro-industrial landscape, Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has launched a $162 million sugar processing complex in the Bono Region. The complex aims to break Ghana’s costly reliance on imported sugar and ignite a new wave of job creation and rural development.

Africa’s wealthiest entrepreneur, Aliko Dangote, is betting on Ghana’s industrial future with a game-changing $162 million investment in a massive sugar processing plant in Kwame-Danso, Bono Region. The project, which falls under the Ghanaian government’s flagship “One District, One Factory” initiative, is designed to slash the nation’s annual sugar import bill, currently pegged at $162 million, while positioning Ghana as a key player in West Africa’s sugar market.

“A new chapter is being written in Ghana,” Dangote shared in a recent LinkedIn post. “At Dangote, we don’t see a factory. We see a lever for autonomy, employment, and the transformation of our continent.”

The sprawling agro-industrial complex will crush 12,000 tons of sugarcane per day, supported by 25,000 hectares of irrigated land. It will produce not only refined sugar but also molasses and ethanol, diversifying output and value for the local economy.

According to Dangote, the project has already secured land and necessary permits, with government backing propelling its fast-track development.

Experts say infrastructure will be critical to its success. “The government must invest in road access,” said financial analyst Courage Zoiku in an interview with Forbes Africa. “Without reliable transport infrastructure, neither raw cane nor refined sugar can reach markets like Accra efficiently.”

Beyond economic impact, the project promises to generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs, uplift rural communities, boost food security, and strengthen Ghana’s economic independence, making it one of the most ambitious private-sector-led industrial projects in recent years.
