In a bold step toward overhauling its struggling agricultural sector, Mozambique has turned to Belarus for support in launching a modern farming revolution aimed at boosting food security and driving economic growth.

Following a high-level meeting in Minsk on Wednesday, Mozambican Agriculture Minister Roberto Mito Albino and his Belarusian counterpart Yuri Gorlov announced a strategic partnership to unlock Mozambique’s agricultural potential. The initiative includes technology transfers, skills training, and increased trade in agricultural products.

“Our president has chosen Belarus as a strategic partner,” Albino stated, highlighting the urgency of transforming Mozambique’s underperforming sector despite years of investment.

Belarus pledged comprehensive support to Mozambique’s agricultural transformation, committing to provide technical expertise, training programmes for local specialists, and food exports such as poultry, dry milk, and butter.

A bilateral working group will be established to oversee implementation, coordinate investments, and fast-track trade efforts. The collaboration places a strong emphasis on developing local capacity through targeted training and knowledge transfer to modernise farming techniques and improve output.

Despite its abundant arable land, water resources, and youthful labour force, Mozambique has faced persistent challenges in scaling up agricultural productivity. This new partnership is seen as a turning point, with hopes that Belarus’s advanced agro-technologies and expertise could finally unlock the sector’s full potential.
